Difference between Juvederm and Restylane

Juvederm and Restylane are hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers used for treating wrinkles and augmenting lips. The surface results of both the products appear to be the same. These injectable dermal fillers provide volume replacement benefits, reducing wrinkles and lifting the skin. Both treatments are non-surgical, pain-free, and have no downtime.

While Juvederm and Restylane come with the same essential ingredients, they differ in texture, usage, costs, and other factors.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is an FDA-approved dermal filler made from biodegradable hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is produced biotechnologically through natural fermentation of streptococcus species of bacteria in a sterile laboratory setting. Therefore, it is considered safer than standard hyaluronic acids, generally produced by animal sources.

This significantly eliminates the chances of transmitting disease from other species and is safe for patients having allergic reactions to common foods such as beef, eggs, and chicken.

Restylane is available in a clear gel offering a dual mechanism of action to treat moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. The gel safely integrates with dermal tissues and binds to water molecules when injected under the skin, providing natural volume. Plus, it naturally degrades and disappears from the body without residue.

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is an injectable hyaluronic acid dermal filler to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds located around the nose to the corners of the mouth. Some range of Juvederm is also used for lip augmentation.

Juvederm is produced via Hylacross Technology from bacterial fermentation called Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid (NASHA), similar to Restylane. It is available in smooth consistency gel in various ranges and formulations for specific treatment purposes.

For instance, the Juvederm XC range comes with local anesthetic lidocaine to numb the treatment area within seconds. The Juvederm Ultra XC products, on the other hand, come integrated with highly cross-linked formulations to treat and volumize deeper folds and wrinkles.
